Dell streak (running on android 2.2.2) has 1530 mah battery and we will see what needs to be done to get a better battery life.
The below tips can be used on other android phones also. These settings have been tried and they worked very well.
Best way to start is back up and everything. Then do a single factory reset. It is better to do. When it asks you to sign in with google account, uncheck the option which says "backup this device on to google account". This is one option that has saved lot of battery life personally.
1) Widgets:- Minimal use of widgets ( better to use 3 widgets in 3 home screens ). Widgets are power hungry and minimal use of them works wonders as it gives better battery life and snappy experience.
2) Launcher:- Choose a good launcher. ADW launcher, Go Launcher and Launcher Pro are commonly used. Among them go launcher has been working very well with various options and 3D graphics.
3) GPS and Auto- Sync can be Unchecked for all the google accounts you may have on the device. Both these options save lot of battery.
4) Wifi settings:- It is advisable to use the feature "When the screen turns off"
Go to Settings-> Wireless & Network settings ->Wi-fi settings -> Click on "Menu" button on your Dell streak and go to "advanced" -> Wifi Sleep policy -> Select "When screen turns off".
When there is no Wireless networks available you can turn off the WIFI completely and the network notification can also be kept unchecked.
Go to Settings-> Wireless & Network settings ->Wi-fi settings -> Uncheck the "Network Notification"
5) Sound Settings:- Select "vibrate" to "never" and under "feedback" section all the options can be unchecked.
6) Display:- Turn the brightness to minimum as the big screen can always drain the battery. Selecting the option of "Auto brightness" didn't help as much as reducing it to minimum. Under the "Animations" select the option which says "some animations". Keep the Screen time out to least possible value.
7) Location & Security settings:- It is better to uncheck the options " Use wireless networks " and "Use GPS satellites". You can leave it unchecked.
8) Applications:- Go to Settings -> Applications -> Running services, Select and remove all those which you think are unnecessary and should not be running.
9) Accounts & Auto-sync:- Uncheck the option which says "auto-sync" (applications sync data automatically). And for all the google accounts it is better to put the update interval to as high as possible as continuous syncing will drain the battery pretty fast.
Additionally you can install a free app called "Zdbox" from app market which gives you detailed information about your battery usage and has lot of features which are very useful in conserving your battery.
Using all the options above and with WIFI &Auto-Sync ON always and apps like Facebook, twitter, yahoo, gmail running in background I was able to get a battery life of nearly 25 to 30 hours consistently over the last one year of my usage. I have 188 apps installed on my Dell streak and yet it is snappy.
My dell streak has been rooted for nearly 8 months and the battery life became better after the rooting was done.
Using the settings above the other android devices like Samsung Galaxy note too showed considerable amount of improvement of battery life.
I hope everyone reading this post find the tips useful.
